April 23, 2015:
Project Itty Bitty is officially....COMPLETED!
I am so happy with the outcome. What an achievement!
A BIG THANK-YOU to everyone who contributed, big or small, to make Project Itty Bitty such a huge success!!!! What a display of success when people come together for a mutual cause and cooperate, create and contribute! That's synergy for you!
Our INITIAL goal was only 50 blankets, as this was HCKids' very first Superhero Mission. But, we quickly realized that we had to up it to 100. In the end we far exceeded our goal, collecting 165 Itty BItty Blankies! Wow!
Blankets came from all over the Lower Mainland (Vancouver & surrounding areas, for those of you not familiar with this part of the world). However, a very special package arrived in the mail addressed to HC Kids Headquarters and in it were a bunch of gorgeous knitted blankets from a lovely lady, Irene Uyeda, all the way from Kamloops, BC!
Thank you to all the children who learned how to knit just for this special cause. Thank you to all the children who already knew how to knit and decided to use their talents, creativity and time to make blankets. Thank you to all the students who took part in their school's knitting clubs and electives.
Thank you to all the wonderful grown-ups who taught children how to knit, created knitting groups and clubs and facilitated communal knitting time, encouraged an inspired other grown-ups to knit and get involved, and who knitted blankets themselves.
Thank you to all the wonderful companies and corporations and public organizations who so graciously offered their site as collection depots. (Ingrid from the Knit & Stitch Shoppe in West Vancouver; Helen from Black Sheep Yarns in Port Moody (www.blacksheepyarns.ca); Laura Bradley from Steadfast Counselling Centres (www.steadfastcounselling.com) and the Tommy Douglas Library and their wonderful wonderful Knit2Gether Group). Thank you to Ms Merrill Kost from the Urban Academy School in New Westminster, for creating a knitting club and inspiring children to knit; and to Mr Jacob Rodgers from John Knox Christian School in Burnaby, for allowing me to teach a mini-elective: Knitting for Charity, at his school.
Thank you to Nicole Haschke from her web-based newsletter: Knitting Nuggets (www.knittingforcharity.org) and broadcasted our project; to Jennifer Moreau from the BurnabyNow and the New Westminster Record for her support and coverage during the campaign and on the actual day of the blanket drop-off! Thank you to Larry Wright for his amazing photos and enthusiasm for the newspapers.
And of course, thank you to Shannon Clarke from the Royal Columbian Hospital for allowing the school children from John Knox and myself to come on down and drop off the collection of blankets and actually see the wondeRful, tiny, amazing babies who would receive one of these blankets! You just made the circle COMPLETE!
Thank you to all the preemie babies....may you grow, prosper and smile!
