Dear parent and mentors:
In this modern and somewhat overwhelming world, it is not uncommon to ask ourselves:
"HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD TO NAVIGATE THROUGH LIFE & LIVE HIS OR HER LIFE TO ITS FULLEST?"
We all want our child to flourish into happy individuals; but in this day and age, there are so many bombarding influences, it is a bit nail-biting when we stop to think what can happen. I believe that a large part of what can make a human happy is by living an authentic life guided by one's character...a value-based, value-driven way of life.
But how can we achieve this? How can we help children build character?
Due to technology and living in the 'information age', children today know infinitely more than we did 30, 40, 50 years ago. The world is becoming a 'smaller' place. From a young age, many children are aware of global issues, such as starvation in Africa; unethical child labour practices in Asia; poverty in India....and even homelessness right in their backdoor! Information, imagery and classroom discussions all contribute to this knowledge. But....what do we do about it? For the majority, and due to no one's fault, it ends right there...the infomercial ended, the social studies report was handed in...and we go back to living our regular lives.
For me, there is a great opportunity loss here. We so want our children to be exemplary citizens. Right here is an opportunity to harness this knowledge, and propel our children to another way of living...a higher consciousness. In my opinion, this is not at all an ambitious expectation from our children today. It is amazing what they can process and accomplish once they are informed, inspired, guided and given the tools.
Haberdash Couture Kids is a way of introducing your child to a value-driven life. And what is great about it is that it is done almost without knowing! Teaching your child leadership and living a life of intention need not be daunting. It can be done very successfully through PLAY!
Standing up for positive change, as an individual, is extremely commendable, but here at HCKids, we believe that doing so as a family, a class, a group or as an organization is more FUN. It catapults these simple actions into one that involves collaboration, cooperation, igniting deeper discussions and giving way to an explosion of ideas...synergy! Parents and other mentors are now walking the talk and being real life role models! And what happens in these instances? Children start to incorporate this higher level of behaviour into everyday life and thinking outside the 'me' box suddenly becomes as natural as breathing. Getting together to achieve common goals becomes exciting and something to look forward to!
Haberdash Couture Kids is where play becomes purposeful. We play! We have fun! We give ourselves the gift of time allowing ourselves the freedom to create without any preconceptions. And miraculously, while we have a ball, we have helped to make this world a better place. We start to gauge ourselves at a higher standard...creating with a conscience, passion and purpose.
HC stands for Haberdash Couture (creating unique, one-of-a-kind creations of self-expression) but HC can also represent many other things....

But through knitting?!
Yes! Studies have shown that knitting helps to develop habits that lead to success. It truly exemplifies the power of simplicity. And ultimately, why complicate this already complicated life? Here are some research findings of the positive effects of knitting on children:
1. school test scores increase because the ability to concentrate and think outside the box increases
2. friendships form that would have otherwise never have been pursued (children from various social circles are meeting in the middle and knitting has become the 'bridge'!)
3. confidence is boosted because pride and a sense of accomplishment and completion is one of the goals of all HC's very tangible knitting projects
4. persistence
5. having the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively in a group
6. knitting in itself is very relaxing and meditative
7. knitting in the millennium has proven to be interesting and fun to both genders
8. children get a real thrill from being able to imagine, invent, create, adorn, and express
9. "Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence": two hands, both sides of brain used --development of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, math skills, reading skills, language skills.
10. "Interpersonal Intelligence": mentoring, conversing, sharing, exchanging ideas
Everyone is welcome to take part in the charitable projects hosted by HCKids. Age does not matter and it is open to not only individuals, but also families, classrooms and other groups. The goal is simply to get children's interest piqued no matter what level they are able to participate in...whether it is by actually knitting the project (understanding that their creativity is directly impacting the lives of others) or just listening to an adult explain the importance of giving while that adult knits the projects.
But by signing up your child to become an HCKid, you will also be giving your child the opportunity to voice their ideas and suggestions for future charitable projects! This is part of the stewardship program in action.
Knit kits offered through HCKids will help your child to further develop their creativity and skills. Just as importantly, all yarn offered on this website has a special story behind it. Yarn purchased from the site will come with an information card which your child can read and learn from. It will tell your child all about that particular Yarn's Tale... from which part of the world the yarn originated and why your child choosing to buy this particular yarn is helping either planet earth or the humans that live on it. For example, some yarns help to lift poverty and by choosing to purchase this yarn, your child has helped to empower a life in another part of the world! It is important they know this!
The beauty of it all is that not only will your child be empowering someone else's life, but simultaneously, s/he will be empowering their own lives! Soon they will begin to understand and prove to themselves that just because they are little does not mean they cannot help make big changes!
HCKids...helping to create positive change, one little stitch at a time!
HCKids...knitting for humanity, friendship & fun!
